FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Roseberys’ first Asian, Antiquities, Islamic, and Indian Art auction of 2025 saw several standout lots achieve prices more than ten times their high estimates. This collaborative online sale featured unsold works, reoffered at auction, drawing strong interest from global bidders.
The top lot of the auction was a set of Three Chinese Sketches of Dunhuang Grotto, which soared past its £500 high estimate to realise a price of £19,680. The sketches attracted competitive bidding over the phones and online before selling to a buyer in China.
Other notable highlights from the Asian section included a Late Qing copper-red-glazed ‘monks’ cap’ ewer with an apocryphal Xuande mark, which sold for £13,120—more than 21 times its £600 high estimate.
In the Islamic & Indian Art section, a rare pair of aquatints depicting the River Ganges by Thomas and William Daniell, from their celebrated series Oriental Scenery, achieved £11,808, far exceeding the £700 high estimate.
The online collaboration between the Asian and Antiquities, Islamic and Indian Arts departments has proved to be a successful formula, as evinced by the 75% overall sell through rate. Online auctions provide an exciting opportunity for rediscovery—works of art that may have been overlooked in a live sale can capture fresh interest in a digital setting.
Alice Bailey, Director and Head of Antiquities, Islamic & Indian Arts
“The middle market for Chinese works of art remains buoyant. We look forward to continuing to offer important works to an audience of discerning collectors in 2025,” added Bill Forrest, Director and Head of Chinese, Japanese & South East Asian Art.
